Mead & Hunt – On the Road

The end of World War II and beginning of the Korean Conflict brought an urgent need for civil defense throughout the country.  A fear of infiltration by the communists instilled a desire for a complete defense network.  One solution, officials believed, was to develop an interstate highway system to allow the movement of military troops and equipment efficiently between states.

Mead & Hunt immediately found work.  Very late in the 1950s, the firm helped construct Interstate 90/94 between Madison’s “east beltline” and STH 19 east of Madison (commonly known as the Badger Interchange), Wisconsin.  After the initial work on the interstate highway system, the firm expanded into other highway projects.  The Wisconsin State Highway Department hired the firm to complete a number of projects during that time period on Highways 146 and 22 in Columbia County, USH 18 between Verona and Mt. Horeb, and STH 30 and USH 51 through Stoughton.
