Iowa Land Use Compatibility Study

The Iowa DOT Office of Aviation is developing compatible land use guidelines and resource materials to help airport sponsors and local communities protect the usefulness of airports, while planning for the community’s growth.

One of the primary threats to the aviation system in Iowa and the United States is the continued encroachment of incompatible land uses near airports.  Compatible land use around airports is important to maintaining safe operating environs for aircraft, property, and people on the ground.  Protecting public investment of airport infrastructure is important to maintaining the viability of existing airports, preventing costly relocation and reconstruction, and preserving the potential for expansion that might be necessary to meet future aviation demand.

The scope of work for this project includes analysis of information collected from airports during the last year.  Essential tasks of the project will be the development of compatible land use guidelines, a resource guidebook, GIS mapping with land use layers, and an outreach program for local communities and planning agencies.  The Office of Aviation contracted with Mead & Hunt to complete the study.
