ALP Narrative Report and Technical Study – Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport

Sonoma County, California

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors selected Mead & Hunt to perform an initial evaluation of the feasibility of extending the Sonoma County Airport’s existing runways or constructing a new runway to achieve a usable length of approximately 6,000 feet.  Sonoma County sponsored the Airport Layout Plan (ALP) Narrative Report and Technical Study with the purpose of determining the appropriate runway length required to sustain scheduled air passenger service and to ascertain the feasibility of extending or building a new runway at Sonoma County Airport.  The study was also designed to provide the County Board of Supervisors with the information it would need to determine the technical feasibility of such an undertaking and the steps necessary to ultimately implement the project if it were determined to be feasible.

An integral element of the study was the county’s formation of a Runway Extension Feasibility Study Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).  The TAC was comprised of seven technical and community representatives, and was charged with reviewing the consultant’s work effort and providing guidance on selected alternatives.  The evaluation considered seven preliminary runway configuration alternatives and ultimately recommended a preferred alternative, which was subsequently adopted by the county.
