Here is a small sampling of some of Mead & Hunt's proudest and most challenging work.

Runway 12/30 Reconstruction – Mason City Municipal Airport, Mason City, Iowa

In 2006, Mead & Hunt was tasked of rehabilitating aging runway pavements for Runway 12/30. The project scope for this $2.2 million project included preliminary and final design and resident engineering services.  The first phase, included the entire runway except the intersection of “Bravo” taxiway.  This area was our second phase, and required coordination of work to allow the airlines smooth and problem free taxiing to and from the primary runway.

The construction began with milling the top four inches of asphalt to remove the prior sealcoats and bituminous overlays. The crack areas were milled an additional depth and width in preparation for the application of Glassgrid, a crack retarding material. The Glassgrid was installed over the cracks and then sealed with a 3 inch bituminous overlay.  The contractor used “new and unique” equipment to assist in their construction of the bituminous pavements which allowed and achieved higher and greater densities of the pavement and the joints.

The Asphalt Pavement Association of Iowa selected this runway reconstruction for their prestigious Smoothness Award in 2006.  This was the second year in a row Mead & Hunt was recognized for our paving work at Mason City Municipal Airport.
