Runway 18/36 Reconstruction – Mason City Municipal Airport, Mason City, Iowa
In 2005, Mead & Hunt undertook the task of rehabilitating the aging Runway 18/36. The project scope for this $4.2 million project included preliminary and final design and resident engineering services.
The reconstruction project had a very aggressive timeline of 60 calendar days and was to be completed in two phases. The first phase, which was scheduled to be completed during the first 40 days, included the reconstruction of both runway intersections, the first 700 feet of Runway 18/36 and 500 feet of Runway 12/30. Both runway thresholds were displaced which allowed aircraft to operate during construction with only minor restrictions. Once the first phase was complete, air traffic was switched to the crosswind runway for the remaining duration of construction.
The second phase of construction began with milling the top four inches of asphalt to remove the seal coats and bituminous overlays. The cracks were milled an additional depth in preparation for the application of Glassgrid, a crack retarding material. The Glassgride was installed over the cracks and then sealed with an asphalt overlay.
