Washington Avenue Realignment and Tunnel – Tulip City Airport
Holland, Michigan
Mead & Hunt designed a $16 million project that consisted of the realignment of Washington Avenue and construction of an 885-foot cut-and-cover tunnel. This allows Washington Avenue to travel under a runway and parallel taxiway. The roadway design consisted of 1.8 miles of reconstruction of rural and urban sections. Approximately 0.4 mile was designed as a four-lane divided urban freeway. The rest was designed as a two-lane rural highway. The urban section used concrete pavement and the rural section used asphalt. Many municipal utilities were relocated, including water and sanitary sewer.
