Reconnaissance Survey

Texas Department of Transportation – Alameda Avenue, El Paso, Texas

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to create retention ponds along Alameda Avenue in the city of El Paso.  Alameda Avenue is a historic traffic corridor that carried the Old Spanish Trail, a national highway completed in the 1920s.  Alameda Avenue served as the primary entrance to the city until the completion of the Interstate and is still used as a major transportation corridor within the community.

TxDOT contracted with Mead & Hunt to conduct a reconnaissance survey of the Area of Potential Effects (APE) for seven proposed ponds.  The purpose of the survey was to identify the significance of historic properties located in the APE.  Mead & Hunt staff worked with TxDOT to define the APE, which included properties within a 150-foot perimeter of the proposed pond sites.

The final survey results were accepted by TxDOT and the Texas Historical Commission.
