Runway, taxiway, and apron reconstruction — Volk Field Air National Guard Base

Camp Douglas, Wisconsin

This project consisted of the reconstruction of a 9,000-feet long by 150-feet wide runway with 2,000 feet of overruns.  Included in the reconstruction was the replacement of the existing storm and under drain systems.  A drainage layer was placed under the concrete and asphalt pavement sections to remove subsurface water from under the pavement section, and route it to the under drain system.  In addition, the new runway profile was raised to increase surface drainage.

This project received several awards including:

  • 2000 Wisconsin Airport Engineering Award
  • Wisconsin Asphalt Pavement Association Innovation Award
  • Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics Engineer-of-the-Year Award
