The Impact of Lost Service

While catching up on my long overdue reading, I came across a very interesting article that discussed the impacts of shrinking service at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG).  The article noted that Chiquita was moving its corporate headquarters from Cincinnati to North Carolina, due in part to the number of commercial flights out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

In 2005, Delta offered nearly all of the 673 daily flights out of CVG with direct service to a number of international destinations. Today, following the numerous mergers and bankruptcy filings, only 170 flights are offered daily and only one direct international destination.

Locally, they have hope that they can turn things around. Existing businesses in the Cincinnati area are lobbying for airlines to consider CVG for new routes, and a new task force has been established to address this issue.

They are looking for ways to reinvent themselves and draw both airlines and users back to the airport.

When airlines leave an area, the impact is huge – affecting businesses, jobs, tourism, and growth. It’s good to see examples of a community working together to bring airlines back.
